Ecophon achieves Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze in Version 4.0

Press release 2024-02-07

Ecophon, a global leader in acoustic systems and part of the Saint-Gobain Group, has achieved Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze for its glass wool products produced in the Nordics, which cover 70% of Ecophon’s sales volumes. Ecophon is one of the first companies to achieve the certification under the new, more rigorous Version 4.0 standards.

Targeting to become the first net-zero carbon acoustic solutions manufacturer, Ecophon is further reducing the footprint of its acoustic systems and improving product transparency. In achieving Cradle to Cradle Certified® (C2C Certified) Version 4.0 certification at the Bronze level, Ecophon has demonstrated exceptional performance across five sustainability categories: Gold in Product Circularity, Silver in Material Health, Clean Air & Climate Protection, Water & Soil Stewardship, and Bronze in Social Fairness.

Being one of the first companies to attain the stricter Version 4.0 certification for their products is a landmark achievement that positions Ecophon at the forefront of sustainable acoustic design, combining environmental and social responsibility with material health and quality. The light-weight glass wool panels are partly made from recycled glass and can be recycled through SoundCircularity, a prize-winning1 recycling service, available in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, and France.

Selecting products that adhere to C2C-principles ensures materials are safe for humans and the environment, compliant with regulations, and benefit property value. Receiving a Silver® C2C Certified Material Health Certificate™ for glass wool products produced in the Nordics underscores Ecophon’s commitment to chemical safety and low emissions, a well-known property of their glass wool ranges. Material health is especially important for the indoor climate in spaces like offices, schools, and healthcare facilities. The certification will replace Ecophon's work with Health Product Declarations (HPDs) in relevant regions, offering a more comprehensive assessment of the sustainability and health impact of their products.

“We are honored to break new ground in achieving Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze under the more stringent Version 4.0 criteria. This is a recognition of our holistic approach to sustainability and our long history of using safe ingredients and recycled content in our products. We are proud not to rely on carbon offsets to reach net-zero, but rather have a long-term sustainable business model through transparency and innovation”, says Ola Karlsson, R&D and Innovation Director, at Saint-Gobain Ecophon.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified® framework is globally recognised for its rigorous assessment of products across sustainability dimensions such as health, circularity, and responsible manufacturing. Aligned with leading Green Building Certifications like LEED and WELL, Cradle to Cradle Certified® is externally verified by a third party and requires re-certification every three years.

The Cradle to Cradle Certified® Version 4.0 certification covers Ecophon’s glass wool ceiling production sites in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.
