Successful, fast-growing bakery doubles its sound absorbers

As Easyfood A/S continues its rapid rise in the Danish convenience food market, the company has faced a new challenge: managing increased noise levels in its expanding production facilities. Following a sound audit that revealed high background noise, Easyfood took decisive steps to improve the acoustic environment by doubling its sound absorbers.

The Danish company Easyfood A/S has quickly risen to prominence in its sector and is now a leading producer of convenience foods in Denmark.

As the company has expanded – with more staff and increased production – noise levels in the factory have naturally risen. During a sound audit by the Danish Labour Inspection Authority, elevated background noise was recorded at one of the production lines and in the packing area. Measurements taken by workplace environment consultants AM-Gruppen revealed noise levels ranging from 80 to 88 dB along parts of the production line.

To reduce the noise to a level where hearing protection would rarely be necessary, acoustic calculations indicated that the number of sound absorbers needed to be doubled. In fact, one could say that Easyfood’s success is now reflected in the number of sound absorbers installed in its factory.

Frozen success

Easyfood has found great success producing deep-frozen baked goods, including bake-off and “thaw and serve” products, as well as pre-cooked pasta. These offerings are designed to simplify baking, cooking, and serving for the company’s many customers.

Since its founding in 2000, Easyfood has grown to become Denmark’s leading producer in this niche. Its market spans Scandinavia and Northern Europe, with major clients including Coop, Danish Supermarket, and McDonald’s.

Today, Easyfood employs around 100 people and operates two production lines. Given the nature of food handling – which includes bread, pasta, meat, and vegetables – strict hygiene and quality control standards are in place.

Cleaning requirements were key

Choosing the right sound-absorbing materials required careful consideration. The company’s rigorous cleaning protocols involve the use of aggressive chemicals. In addition to cleaning machinery at the start of each baking session and weekly factory cleanings, all surfaces – including ceiling-mounted sound absorbers – are cleaned every three months.

After evaluating various acoustic systems, Easyfood selected vertically hanging Ecophon Hygiene Foodtec™ Baffle C3* for the ceilings. For the walls, which are cleaned more frequently, they chose Ecophon Hygiene Advance™ Wall C4, designed for highly corrosive environments.

In total, 450 m² of the production line and 100 m² of the packing area received acoustic treatment. The factory itself spans 2,500 m², while the entire Easyfood facility in Kolding covers twice that area.

With the new ceiling baffles and wall panels installed, Technical Manager Sven Östergaard reports a significant improvement in the acoustic environment. Staff feedback has also been positive – they appreciate being able to communicate more easily in a normal speaking tone.
