Acoustics and hygiene in a thermal spa environment

Welcoming up to 4,000 visitors every day, Balaruc-les-Bains thermal baths is the largest thermal spa facility in France. In an environment centred around seawater-based treatments, creating a calm and comfortable atmosphere is essential to the visitor experience.

The individual hydrotherapy treatment cabins, measuring between 6 and 9 m², presented a significant acoustic challenge. The constant sound of bubbling seawater, combined with hard tiled surfaces, generated high levels of reverberation within the enclosed spaces. As a result, noise could quickly build up, affecting both visitors and staff.

At the same time, the acoustic solution needed to meet strict hygiene requirements. Treatment rooms are cleaned and disinfected daily, while the permanent saline atmosphere places additional demands on materials and long-term durability.

To address these challenges, the spa selected Ecophon Hygiene Advance™, a ceiling solution designed for environments where acoustic comfort and stringent hygiene standards must go hand in hand.

Improved comfort for visitors and staff

Following the installation, reverberation levels in the treatment cabins were significantly reduced. The sound generated by water turbulence is now better controlled, helping to create a calmer and more comfortable environment for visitors, while also improving working conditions for staff.

The project demonstrates how effective acoustics, hygiene performance and durability can be successfully combined in demanding environments exposed to humidity, saline air and intensive daily use.
