Light, acoustics and learning at Elsa Triolet school

Located in Bordeaux’s new Brazza district, Elsa Triolet primary school underwent a renovation project aimed at creating a better learning environment for pupils and staff. A key objective was to improve acoustic comfort throughout the building while also addressing challenges related to lighting in several spaces.

Noise can have a significant impact on learning, concentration and wellbeing in educational settings. To create more comfortable classrooms and shared spaces, the project team selected Ecophon Solo™ Baffle as the main acoustic solution. The baffles were chosen for their high sound absorption performance and their ability to support an innovative lighting design.

Architect Jules Mousseigne from LeibarSeigneurin wanted to create a soft, diffuse ceiling light that would resemble natural daylight. By combining Ecophon Solo™ Baffle with strategically positioned LED lighting, the project achieved both the desired visual effect and effective acoustic control.

Approximately 12,000 baffles were installed across classrooms, corridors, the dining hall, gymnasium and other shared areas, covering a total surface area of 3,000 m². The solution helps reduce reverberation and improve speech intelligibility, creating a more supportive environment for teaching and learning.

The project demonstrates how acoustic design, lighting and functionality can work together to support wellbeing in educational environments. By using solutions with recycled content and recyclability credentials, the renovation also aligns with the sustainability ambitions of the Brazza district development.
