Historic school transformed with acoustic solutions

The modernisation of the historic Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav Secondary School in Kežmarok, originally built in 1893, has created a unique link between heritage and contemporary technology. This national cultural monument underwent extensive renovation to provide a modern, accessible, and healthy environment for more than two hundred students.

The €13.4 million project, led by the Prešov self-governing region, included a comprehensive upgrade of electrical systems, heating, sanitary facilities, and the façade, as well as the addition of new laboratories, an IT classroom, and a library.

Acoustic comfort as part of a modern learning environment

Acoustic comfort – essential for effective learning – was a key consideration during the renovation. In large classrooms and shared spaces, high noise levels can negatively impact concentration, speech intelligibility, and overall wellbeing.

To address this, Ecophon Solo™ Circle acoustic panels were installed, delivering both functional benefits and visual appeal. The circular panels, suspended from the ceiling, absorb unwanted noise and improve speech clarity in classrooms, staff rooms, and corridors. Their design also complements the historic character of the building in a sensitive and elegant way.

Connecting two schools with one vision

Upon completion, Kežmarok will feature a unique educational campus linking the secondary school with the School of Applied Arts. Shared spaces – including the library, dining hall, and common rooms – will encourage students to meet, collaborate, and nurture creativity in an environment that supports learning and mental wellbeing.

This renovation is not just about new technologies and a refreshed building – it demonstrates how well-designed acoustics can bring people together and create spaces where focus, creativity, and joyful learning thrive.
