Acoustic design for a multifunctional preschool

The preschool in Ovča, located within the Municipality of Belgrade, is designed as a contemporary learning environment with a strong focus on acoustic comfort. The facility accommodates 140 children and includes a central kitchen serving several surrounding kindergartens.

The project was commissioned by the City of Belgrade and developed from a competition-winning concept by Studio OBE. The execution project was carried out by Saobraćajni institut CIP, with Maja Pintović as lead architect.

From an early stage, the design placed particular emphasis on acoustic performance. In preschool environments, maintaining low reverberation times is essential. Young children are especially sensitive to noise, and excessive sound can affect speech intelligibility, concentration and overall wellbeing.

To support a calm and supportive learning environment, sound-absorbing solutions were integrated throughout the building.

In the classrooms, high-performance ceiling systems provide effective sound absorption while maintaining a clean and consistent visual expression. Suspended units add further acoustic control and introduce subtle variation to the interior.

Wall absorbers are installed at key interaction points, helping to reduce sound reflections at the level where children and educators communicate. In the central kitchen, where both hygiene and acoustics are critical, dedicated ceiling systems combine sound absorption with surfaces suitable for frequent cleaning and strict sanitary requirements.

The result is a significant reduction in reverberation time, particularly in the frequency range important for speech clarity. This supports clear communication, reduces background noise and contributes to a calm and structured environment for both children and staff.

By combining architectural quality with carefully integrated acoustic design, the preschool in Ovča provides a learning environment that supports both wellbeing and everyday interaction.
