Creating spaces for collaboration and concentration

Timber Quay, a landmark office building in Derry-Londonderry, has been transformed into modern teaching facilities for Ulster University’s School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems. The refurbishment has created inspiring spaces that support focused learning, communication and collaboration.

Working closely with RPP Architects and contractor Ard Contracts, a bespoke ceiling solution was developed to align with the architectural vision for the project. Ecophon Solo™ rafts and baffles were specified throughout the building, combining strong visual impact with effective acoustic performance through a carefully selected colour palette.

The architect’s colour choices bring warmth, depth and character to the teaching spaces. Scallop Shell provides a softer alternative to pure white, helping to brighten the interiors while creating a more welcoming atmosphere. Accent shades including Silk Slate, Eucalyptus Leaf and Sage Garden add visual interest and contribute to a contemporary environment for students and lecturers.

Close collaboration during the installation phase helped ensure a smooth process and a high-quality finish. The combination of rafts and baffles creates a distinctive ceiling design while also improving acoustic comfort throughout the building.

By reducing reverberation and supporting speech clarity, the acoustic solution helps create learning environments where concentration, communication and wellbeing can thrive. The result is a vibrant, comfortable and acoustically balanced setting that supports both teaching and learning.
