Heriot Watt University - Good acoustics improve students’ accuracy
In a UK study, researchers found that most noise issues in school classrooms were not caused by the assumed issues of noise from planes, trains and cars, but by the pupils themselves during learning activities.

The way to lasting knowledge
By introducing sound-absorbing ceilings in the classrooms they:

How is this possible?
The measured effect of installing a sound-absorbing ceiling was a 3 dB reduction in the sound level in an unoccupied classroom. However, the real change is what this does to the behaviour of the people in the classroom. Since everybody can be heard and understood without raising their voices, pupils and teachers immediately started speaking more quietly. In fact – 7 dB more quietly.
The overall 10 dB reduction is perceived by humans as a halving of the sound level. This led to increased wellbeing for teachers and pupils, a more relaxed environment and subsequently: improved accuracy in everyday school work.
Staff working in the treated classrooms say there’s an enormous difference. Not only do they not have to shout to be heard, but there’s a generally calmer, quieter and more relaxed atmosphere in the classroom. We’re all delighted.

The study
Initiated by the UK government and performed by researchers from Heriot-Watt University. Conducted in 70 classrooms in 15 schools over a period of three years. The children were between 5 and 11 years old.
