Northgate Arena reopens with improved acoustic comfort
Brio Northgate, formerly Northgate Arena in Chester, has officially reopened following a £12 million refurbishment. Originally built in the 1970s and once recognised as the largest leisure centre in Europe, the venue has been extensively refurbished and reconfigured to create a flexible destination that supports health, wellbeing and long-term community use. With improved accessibility, enhanced energy efficiency, and upgraded fitness, sports and swimming facilities, the transformed arena has been designed to meet the needs of the local community both now and in the future.
Acoustic solutions were carefully selected for each refurbished space, helping to create a comfortable, durable and high-performing leisure environment. The project required a flexible approach, with specifications reviewed and adapted to meet the practical demands of the refurbishment while delivering the appropriate acoustic performance throughout the building.
Ecophon Hygiene Performance™ A ceiling tiles on a C4 grid were installed in the changing rooms and toilet areas, providing a durable solution suitable for humid and hygiene-sensitive environments. In the reception, spin studio and gym, Ecophon Focus™ E T24 and Ecophon Focus Edge™ 500 were selected to provide effective sound absorption while maintaining a clean, contemporary appearance. Ecophon Advantage™ A ceilings were installed in circulation areas to manage noise levels and improve acoustic comfort in busy communal spaces.
Close collaboration with Read Construction throughout the project helped ensure the acoustic solutions aligned with the wider refurbishment programme and were delivered efficiently on site. The result is a modern, inclusive and welcoming leisure facility that offers a more comfortable acoustic environment for visitors and staff alike.
